Category Description: Summit Road is one of the best railfanning locations on the Peavine. In the eighties and nineties it was downright spectacular. Summit Road is a little side street off all the main roads. If you don't know it is there, you're likely to miss it. As the name implies, you are just about to the top of Batavia Hill. The tracks cross Summit Road at grade, and parallel a small creek parallels the tracks. The road bridge over the creek make an elevated platform from which to shoot, with the embankment down to the creek in the foreground. Today, the scene is horribly overgrown and not nearly as picturesque. But in the years of steam excursions, the embankment and creek were kept clear. You could see all the way down to the bend. Eastbound trains would be working hard, the full length and weight of the train snaking down the five plus mile grade. Sites blended with sounds to create a thrilling railfan experience. The entire design of this section of my peavine division layout was done with the intent of creating the long view along the creek. It was intentionally designed to prevent you from seeing it in parallel. You can only view this seen from Summit Road, as though you were standing on the small bridge. And to thank Jeff for saving the day, I named the bridge after him. |
